Crystal Mountain Honored for Keeping MI Beautiful

Shares “Michigan Plaque” with Master Plan Partners

THOMPSONVILLE, MICH – Crystal Mountain and its land-use partners at Johnson Hill Land Ethics Studio have been selected to receive the Michigan Plaque from Keep Michigan Beautiful, Inc. The award is given to programs and activities that substantially contribute to environmental improvement, clean up, beautification, site restoration and historical preservation.

Keep Michigan Beautiful began in 1962 when Governor John B. Swainson appointed an anti-litter committee. The committee changed its name to Keep Michigan Beautiful the following year and later was named the state’s official organization to combat litter and promote beautification by Governor George Romney.

The Michigan Plaque is being awarded to Crystal Mountain for its long range master plan that includes retail, recreation, and lodging in a way that compliments, rather than contradicts the landscape.

“For two decades Johnson Hill Land Ethics Studio, led by Mark Johnson, has guided us in developing our master plan which we have then implemented iteratively over time. The goal of this plan is to create a community that feels real and celebrates the beauty of this region,” says Chris MacInnes, Crystal Mountain’s COO. “Other key, long term members of our land planning design team include architect Bob Holdeman (recipient with his wife Jane, of the 2012 Michigan Legacy Art Park Legacy Award) and Maryland based-landscape designer Sandra Clinton.

Established in 1956, Crystal Mountain is a family-owned, four-season resort that is nationally recognized for its skiing, golf, and award-winning spa. Located in northwest lower-Michigan, a short drive from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the resort features downhill and cross-country skiing, Michigan Legacy Art Park, 36 holes of championship golf, Michigan’s only alpine slide, an outdoor water playground, a variety of lodging and dining options, countless year-round activities and kids programs, an IACC-approved conference center, weddings, real estate and Crystal Spa.
