Iron Fish Fat Chance Fat Tire Bike race set for Jan. 19

January 6, 2020

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. – Win winter on a fat tire bike.

Registration is open for the eight annual Iron Fish Fat Chance Fat Tire Bike Race at Crystal Mountain on Jan. 19. The race is part of the Short’s Brewing Fat Bike Series of races.

“Serious competition and fun always co-exist for this race,” Chris Remy, recreation adventure sports manager for Crystal Mountain, said. “We have great trails, a fun atmosphere and cash prizes for some categories.”

This year’s open and master races race course at Crystal Mountain is on the Otter Trail Loop, two miles of fast, twisting sections with minimal elevation. The winner in each category will get in as many laps as possible in the 90-minute allotted time.

All races start at 10 a.m. with awards ceremony inside the Crystal Center at noon.

“The Fat Chance Race and pre-ride is a winter highlight, and a way for Iron Fish to showcase the fabulous trails our friends at Crystal Mountain offer the region,” Sarah Anderson, partner at Iron Fish Distillery, said.

Cash prizes and medals will be awarded to the top-three finishers in each 90-minute category: Men’s Open; Women’s Open; Men’s Master (45+); Women’s Master (45+).

There is also a 45-minute category for men (all ages) and women (all ages). The 45-minute Trail Loop is wide open and a beginner friendly trail.

“The beginner trail is perfect for any fat tire bike enthusiast who’s just getting into racing,” Remy added.

Helmets are required for every rider.

What’s a cool race without swag? Crystal Mountain, Iron Fish Distillery, Einstein Cycles, Bearclaw Bicycle Co., Up Bike TC, KOLO TC and Kona Bikes

Registration is $50 per rider. Race-day registration is $60 per rider, if available. Registration includes race bib, brew ticket and post-race chili bar.

New this year is a Last Chance Fat Tire pre-ride, which will be a practice run to help riders get familiar with the race course. That will start at 11 a.m. Jan. 12. Riders will start and finish the practice run from Iron Fish Distillery, just up the road from Crystal Mountain at 14234 Dzuibanek Road in Thompsonville.
