NASTAR Midwest Regional Championship set for this weekend

February 24, 2020

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. – The NASTAR Midwest Regional Championship will see competitors and ski racers go head to head for a shot at a potential $5,000 cash purse Friday through Sunday at Crystal Mountain.

Participants get a chance to qualify for the NASTAR National Championship in Snowmass, Colo., in March.

“This is not only a prestigious event – it’s a fun one,” John Melcher, Chief Operating Officer for Crystal Mountain, said. “This enables skiers to get out on a race course and help them gain the confidence and courage to race like professional skiers.”

Anyone registered with NASTAR can participate. Register online here.

NASTAR stands for National Standard Race, and is the world’s largest recreational ski and snowboard race program. It aims to allow racers of all ages and abilities a means to compare their race results to other competitors across the country through a handicapping system, regardless of when and where they race.

Participants compete within their age and ability groups on Saturday. The top 32 male and female racers who score the most Team Points will qualify for the Race of Champions Finals on Sunday.

The dual head-to-head race will be a single elimination event with the final four racers in the men's and women’s races splitting a share of a potential $5,000 cash purse.

Two-time Olympic Super G medalist and 16-year U.S. Ski Team alumnus Andrew Weibrecht will be at Crystal Mountain for the event. Known to his fellow racers as “War Horse,” Weibrecht will be the pacesetter for races all weekend long.

There will be events and fun activities throughout the weekend, including a Race Clinic on Friday led by Weibrecht and Crystal Mountain’s certified coaches. Skiers should register in advance online for the clinic here.

Event sponsors Atomic, HEAD, Smith, Swix, Bula and Bolle will be giving away swag and showcasing their products throughout the weekend.

TESLA will also be at Crystal Mountain with six electric cars for guests to test drive. Test drives are 3 to 9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday from the TESLA display. The display is in LOT H, between Crystal Center and The Lodge.
