Meet Year of Spa recipient Kim Dimmett
January 13, 2021
THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. – Kim Dimmett is the last person to practice self-care. Yet she’s probably the first person to understand its importance.
Dimmett, 49, is executive director of Every Woman’s Place in Muskegon, Mich., a nonprofit shelter that helps women and children heal from sexual, physical and emotional assault and domestic violence.
All services at Every Woman’s Place are provided for free. And while the job is rewarding, most would argue it would weigh heavily on anyone’s mind.
“We’re blessed where I work,” Dimmett said. “The staff has to force self-care on themselves because they are so diligent about taking care of others that they often need to be reminded to take care of themselves.”
Dimmett will receive a Year of Spa, a nomination-based promotional award developed by Crystal Spa at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, Mich.
Year of Spa replaced the resort’s annual Open House event that hundreds of guests attended to sample products and services. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19. But Stephanie Scott, vice president of Retail and Wellness for Crystal Mountain, wanted to do something to replace it. So the goal for Year of Spa was to find a fun alternative to the Open House and recognize people in Michigan who deserve routine pampering.
“We really wanted to give back to people who have shown us the best of themselves at a time of challenging circumstances,” Scott said. “We had some really wonderful nominations – from teachers to nurses to stay-at-home moms, but we were all blown away by Kim’s selflessness, her work and her compassion for so many people.”
Dimmett will receive a spa treatment every month for one year throughout 2021.
“I do my hair, thank goodness for that,” she said with a laugh. “I used to be diligent and have a spa treatment every now and then; it was my time. But I haven’t done that in a while.”
Every Woman’s Place started in 1975 and offers shelter for women, children, men and those who identify as males. The shelter offers crisis intervention, support groups, children’s services, education and prevention initiatives and a sober living program for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and sex trafficking. Every Women’s Place serves about 1,000 people every year.
Every Woman’s Place board member Crystal Feasby nominated Dimmett and said recognizing her would allow Dimmett the opportunity to “reset,” “a luxury she likely wouldn’t afford herself.”
“That reset will give her even more strength to continue to do the important work she is doing,” Feasby said. “Her work is so important to our community because it supports community members when they are at some of the lowest points in their lives.”
Under Kim’s leadership, Every Woman’s Place has evolved to better meet the needs of survivors. Dimmett has helped in transitioning Every Woman’s Place to a place that adapts and responds quickly and with care so every person can receive safe shelter, comprehensive, supportive services and emergency assistance, even during COVID-19, Feasby said.
Dimmett, who moved to Muskegon in October 2019 from Galveston, Texas, has lived all over the country and was formerly in the United States Air Force. But she has made a home in Muskegon.
“As a transplant to our community, Kim has given back so much, and I would love to have her experience the softer side of Michigan,” Feasby said.
Winning would allow Kim the opportunity to “reset,” often, a luxury she likely wouldn’t afford herself otherwise. That reset will give her even more strength to continue to do the important work she is doing.
