Crystal Trails: Calling All Trailblazers
We have some exciting news to share that will have you tuning up your bikes and lacing up your walking shoes. The scenic Betsie Valley Trail has officially been designated a Pure Michigan Trail, recognizing the exceptional beauty and the fantastic recreational opportunities it offers. And guess what? This stunning trail is easily accessible from Crystal Mountain!
For those unfamiliar, the Betsie Valley Trail is a bike and pedestrian-friendly 22-mile route through Benzie County, offering both paved and aggregate portions, is a non-motorized pathway, and welcomes leashed dogs. Friends of the Betsie Valley Trail, a group of volunteers who advocate for and maintain the trail, are currently working to pave the trail between Beulah and Thompsonville in an effort to make it even more accessible to all.
It's All Downhill from Here… in a Good Way
We recommend a one-way pedal on the Betsie Valley Trail starting from the nearby village of Thompsonville, about two miles from Crystal Mountain, and ending in Frankfort. Why? Two reasons.
1. Lake Michigan. Finishing your ride at the incredible Lake Michigan shoreline in downtown Frankfort brings a unique sense of accomplishment. Starting from the deep north woods and finishing at the edge of the never-ending, blue horizon, delivers the impression you've covered a greater distance than 22 miles on your trusty two-wheeler.
2. Elevation. It's not a word we hear often in Michigan. But stats are stats. Thompsonville sits at 794 feet above sea level. Frankfort at 633 feet. So while the seemingly flat and mellow trail follows the former Ann Arbor Railroad tracks, rest assured that you are continuously traveling DOWNHILL while pedaling from Thompsonville to the freshwater coast.
For an effortless return to the trailhead or Crystal Mountain, arrange a ride with Benzie Bus.
