All 58 downhill runs and 103 acres of skiable terrain now open!

January 15, 2022

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. (Jan. 15, 2022) – If opening day is the most exciting day of the season, the second most exciting day of the season is here: All 58 slopes across 103 skiable acres will be 100% open starting today – three weeks earlier than last season.

With Mother Nature dumping more than a foot of snow this month and snowmakers running the snow guns for more than 450 hours so far this season, skiers and riders have a base of up to 54 inches at Crystal Mountain.

“Our snowmaking superheroes have been working around the clock, firing up all 167 snow guns at every opportunity,” John Melcher, Crystal Mountain CEO, said. “Thanks to the strategic plan of our Mountain Operations team, we have had some great skiing every day this season, despite up and down temperatures and minimal natural snow.”

Crystal invested in an additional 14 snow guns this year, bringing the total to 167. And under ideal conditions of low temperatures, low humidity, easterly winds and high barometric pressure, the snowmaking team can cover the entire mountain in about a foot of snow in about 45 hours.

An additional 3,500 feet of snowmaking pipe was also installed over the summer, allowing for more water to be pumped through to the snow guns more efficiently. The snowcat fleet also grew with the addition of two groomers, assisting the snowmaking crew to push snow around the mountain more strategically.

The downhill runs aren’t the only trails 100% open this weekend. Crystal’s 25 kilometers of the cross country trails are open. Twelve miles of fat biking trails are also groomed and ready to go, along with ice skating and snowshoeing.

Save time and money by purchasing a season pass or lift ticket in advance online, then reload the RFID card to save time and money on your next visit as well. For the latest slope conditions and lift hours check the daily snow report at crystalmountain.com/snow.

Don’t forget to vote for the Crystal Mountain snowmaking team in the I AM a Snowmaker contest! They are the only Midwest snowmaking team in the finals and the first Michigan ski resort crew to ever make it to the final round. Voting is open until Jan. 21.
