New amenity unveiled at Crystal Mountain

December 27, 2019

THOMPSONVILLE, Mich. – A new winter experience awaits young skiers at Crystal Mountain that yurt gonna love.

A newly constructed yurt is nestled atop The Backyard and North Face, and will serve as a cozy rest stop for some of the resort’s youngest skiers, aged 7 to 12, who are enrolled in Crystal Kids ski school. The yurt opens Saturday.

“The yurt will be a great place for kids in these programs to take breaks, warm up and get a snack while avoiding the hassle of returning to the base lodge” Janice Davidson, director of Snowsports and Recreation for Crystal Mountain, said. “We will also serve lunch there, which will add another element of fun – a picnic in the woods and on the mountain.”

The yurt is 30 feet in diameter and 14 feet high – 750-square-feet total – and will accommodate 48 kids and staff at a time to start.

The permanent, circular, tent-like structure will only be available for Crystal Kids through Jan. 4, and on weekends and holidays through the winter.

The yurt is an addition to The Backyard, part of the resort’s $11 million resort expansion that opened in 2016. The Backyard features a triple chairlift and eight downhill trails – great for beginner and intermediate skiers and a perfect location for ski school students who want to learn how to ski or build some confidence.

But how else can the yurt be yurt-ilized?

The Crystal Mountain team is looking at future uses for the structure as a year-round feature, to include summer recreational activities.

Crystal Kids program offer children the opportunity to explore the slopes, improve their skiing skills and make new friends. For more information, please visit www.crystalmountain.com/lessons/
